Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Oyo State chapter has set agenda for Youths and Sports Commissioner Designate, Wasilat Adefemi Adegoke.
In a congratulatory message signed by the Association’s Secretary Adewale Tijani, Oyo SWAN advised the 29 year old lady nominated for the post of the State Commissioner for Youths and Sports to make development of sports at the grassroots her top priority upon assumption of office.
Oyo SWAN, through its Chairman Niyi Alebiosu, noted that grassroots sports are very important as they serve the foundation for sports development at the state and national levels.
“It’s highly imperative for the new Sports Commissioner to focus more on the revival of grassroots sports, especially school games. This is because school games unearth talents and future stars for the states and the nation. A large number of Nigeria’s present sports stars as Tobi Amusan, Ese Brume and Akinkunmi Amoo were products of school games”, Alebiosu said.
The State SWAN Chairman, while also urging Adegoke to vigorously embark on youth empowerment programmes, assured that sports journalists in the state would co-operate with the new Commissioner to assist her in attaining her set targets.
Born in June 1994, Wasilat Adegoke hailed from Lanlate in Ibarapa East Local Government area of the state. She graduated from Department of Statistics at The Polytechnic Ibadan.
Miss Adegoke, in spite of her young age, is an active grassroots politician and served as the State PDP Ex-officio between 2018 and 2021.
She was actively involved in the enthronement of Governor Seyi Makinde administration in 2019 and his re-election in 2023 by mobilizing grassroots supports for the Governor in the two electrons.
The Commissioner Designate, whose nomination has been cleared by the state legislature, will succeed Seun Fakorede, who also hailed from Ibarapa zone.
