The Head, Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies, Professor I. O. Uthman has disclosed that the Department is poised to host three landmark conferences before the end of this year.
He spoke during a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS, in his office.
According to the HOD, the Department would host the International Centenary Conference to mark 100 years of the Islamic Organisation Movement in Africa and beyond at which the Registrar/Chief Executive Officer of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Professor Isiaq Oloyede has accepted to deliver the Keynote Address.
The Department would also host the conference of the National Association of Teachers of Arabic and Islamic Studies in Nigeria as well as the TETFund sponsored National Workshop on Interfaith Dialogue for Peace.
Professor Uthman said the courtesy visit was to seek the assistance of the University to ensure the success of the conferences.
He also informed the Vice-Chancellor that the Department is in dire need of more staff, given that three of its professors recently retired while two others would be retiring soon.
The HOD also acknowledged the donation of the sum of N960,000 (Nine Hundred and Sixty Thousand Naira only) from a former staff of the Department, Dr. J. A. Shittu to pay for the services of Teaching Assistants.
The Vice-Chancellor assured that the University would do all within its limited resources to contribute to the success of the various conferences.
He also sympathized with the HOD on the shortage of staff and assured that the needs of the Department would be addressed as soon as the University receives the approval to recruit more staff.
He, however, advised the Head of Department to forward his requests formally.
